An Overview of Running Start
Graduation Requirements
Graduation requirements are established by each high school. Students must consult with their high school counselor for information regarding which college courses meet high school graduation requirements.
Enrollment in specific college classes cannot be guaranteed, even if the classes are needed for high school graduation.
Running Start provides a wonderful opportunity for eligible high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college courses at Edmonds Community College as part of their high school program.
Running Start students enroll in college courses numbered 100 and above, tuition-free, while completing high school. They may enroll simultaneously in high school and college, or solely in college classes. The combined enrollment of an eligible student in a high school and the college does not usually exceed one full-time equivalent student.
If a student enrolls full-time at Edmonds Community College, he/she can currently enroll in a maximum of 18 college level credits per quarter, paid for by the Running Start Program.
Students will receive both high school credit toward graduation and college credit for classes taken at Edmonds. Typically, a 1 quarter 5-credit class at the college is equivalent to a year-long class at the high school.
Not all credits from Edmonds Community College may be transferable to other colleges. Students and parents are encouraged to contact specific colleges for their transfer policies.
Classes meet for approximately 11 weeks each quarter and are offered days, evenings, weekends, and online.
While tuition is free, there are some costs for Running Start students every quarter:
- Books and supplies
- Assessment Fees
- Materials and Facilities Fees
- Transportation
Please note that the Running Start program only operates during the normal school year (Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters). Tuition and fees for any courses taken at the college during Summer quarter is the student's responsibility.
